a social enterprise that helps us reduce waste, support local communities, and care for our planet. Through this program, up to 95% of our salon waste is recycled or repurposed, from hair clippings to product packaging. It's beauty with purpose

Hair Booms by Sustainable Salons

Hair might seem like waste, but it’s actually one of the most powerful tools we have for environmental clean-up. Through the Sustainable Salons program, cut hair is collected from salons across Aotearoa and Australia and used to create Hair Booms — long, stocking-like tubes filled with hair that are designed to soak up oil spills in our oceans and waterways.

Human hair is naturally oil absorbent. Just one kilogram of hair can soak up to eight litres of oil. This makes it an incredibly effective and sustainable alternative to traditional oil spill clean-up products, which are often made from plastic-based materials that end up harming the environment even more.

Hair Booms are used by emergency response teams, councils, and environmental organisations as part of clean-up kits for both land and sea oil spills. They help contain and remove oil from affected areas quickly and naturally, all while repurposing a material that would otherwise go to landfill.

Sustainable Salons collects and stores tonnes of hair across their depots, ensuring it’s ready to be turned into booms when disaster strikes. This program not only helps protect marine life and fragile ecosystems, but also shows how the hair industry can play an active role in creating a circular, waste-free future.

Every time you get a haircut at a participating salon, your hair could be helping protect the planet. That’s beauty with impact.

Metal Recycling with Sustainable Salons

Every bit counts, even the foil from your highlights.

Through the Sustainable Salons program, all metals used in the salon are collected and professionally recycled. This includes foil, colour tubes, product cans, and hairspray bottles — even the small or contaminated items that usually can’t go in your household recycling bin.

In most salons, these materials would end up in landfill, but Sustainable Salons ensures they are sorted, cleaned, and sent to local recyclers. Once processed, the metals are melted down and repurposed into new products like bicycles, car parts, and building materials.

Even the tiniest piece of foil has value. Every bit of recycled metal helps raise money for OzHarvest and KiwiHarvest, two incredible charities that rescue food and provide meals to people in need across New Zealand and Australia.

It’s a smart, sustainable system that turns waste into resources and helps people and the planet. When you visit a Sustainable Salon, your service supports something much bigger.

This is conscious beauty in action.

Paper and Cardboard Recycling with Sustainable Salons

Paper might seem simple, but in the salon world, it adds up fast.

Through the Sustainable Salons program, all paper and cardboard waste — from product boxes to delivery packaging and magazines — is collected and fully recycled. Instead of being sent to landfill, these materials are responsibly processed through commercial recycling channels to ensure they’re given a new life.

In many salons, the mix of product residue, dyes, and packaging means some paper waste is not recycled properly. Sustainable Salons solves this by sorting and managing everything off-site, so nothing goes to waste unnecessarily.

The recycled paper and cardboard are turned into new paper products, supporting a circular economy and reducing the need for virgin materials. This helps cut emissions, save trees, and reduce the salon’s overall environmental footprint.

Every appointment at a Sustainable Salon supports this mission — where even the smallest pieces of paper are part of a bigger impact

Chemical Disposal and Power with Sustainable Salons

Copy of Chemicals.jpg

Hair salons use a range of professional products and tools every day, which can have a lasting impact on the environment if not managed properly. Sustainable Salons provides real solutions to reduce that impact and support a cleaner, greener industry.

All leftover colour and chemical waste is collected in purpose-built buckets and removed from the salon. Instead of being rinsed down the sink, it is transported to specialist facilities where it is carefully neutralised and disposed of safely. This keeps harmful substances out of our waterways and protects our marine life and ecosystems.

But it is not just about what goes down the drain. Salons also use a lot of power through blow dryers, colour processors, and hot tools. Sustainable Salons encourages more energy-efficient practices and helps salons explore ways to reduce power usage. This includes choosing energy-saving appliances, turning off unused equipment, and supporting green energy options where available.

By choosing a Sustainable Salon, you are supporting smarter chemical management and more conscious energy use. It is one more step toward a salon industry that protects people and the planet.

Small actions lead to powerful change.

Plastic Recycling with Sustainable Salons

Plastic is one of the biggest waste challenges in the salon industry, but Sustainable Salons has created a smart system to keep it out of landfill and give it new purpose.

All kinds of plastic are collected — including shampoo and conditioner bottles, tubs, lids, packaging, and even soft plastics that normally cannot be recycled through household systems. Once sorted and cleaned, this plastic is sent to trusted recycling partners who turn it into new products like outdoor furniture, building materials, and reusable items.

Some of that recycled salon plastic is turned into combs and plant pots, both of which are available for repurchase. These pieces are not only practical but carry a story — each one a small reminder of what is possible when waste is given a second life.

It is a simple, effective way to keep valuable materials in circulation and out of the environment.

This is why we created the Return and Reward system

We wanted to do more than just recycle behind the scenes. We wanted to give our clients the chance to be directly involved in reducing waste.

The Return and Reward system invites you to bring back your empty Keune bottles, So Pure refills, and Style products. When you return five from the same range or 7 SoPure, you will receive one back on us, matched to the same value.

This small act helps close the loop, reduce landfill, and support the Sustainable Salons mission in a meaningful way.

Together we are reshaping what beauty waste looks like  turning it into something useful, thoughtful, and sustainable.
